Exports fell in August and there was a trade deficit for the third consecutive month

Indeed, sales abroad totaled 7,537 million dollars, with a year-on-year drop of 6.9%, and imports added 7,837 million dollars, which represented an increase of 36.2%.

In this way, the commercial exchange (exports plus imports) it increased 11% in relation to the same month of the previous year, and reached an amount of US$15,374 million.

In the accumulated of the first eight months of the year, meanwhile, the commercial exchange showed a surplus of US$2,193 million, below the US$10,655 million of January-August 2021.

During the eighth month of the year, the purchases of manufactured fuels and lubricants, which reflected the highest year-on-year growth in percentage terms, rising 68.3% and reaching a total of US$1,336 million.

Next were the imports of capital goods, which grew by 44.5% and totaled US$1,159 million.

However, in absolute terms, most of the imports corresponded to intermediate goods with a total of US$2,974 million and a 37.9% stake over the total import basket.

“Imports increased 36.2% compared to the same month of the previous year (US$2,083 million), as a result of a 15.3% rise in prices and 18.2% in quantities,” specified the Statistical Institute.

Exports

Regarding exports, in August all items grew, except for primary products (PP), which had a year-on-year drop of 27.4%. Fuels and energy (C&E) rose 6.8%; manufactures of agricultural origin (MOA), 5.2%; and manufactures of industrial origin (MOI), 0.7%.

The result of exports, which added up in the eighth month of the year US$7,537 million, with a decrease of 6.9% year-on-year, was due to a decrease of 16.9% in quantities and an increase of 11.9% in prices.

In addition, the INDEC reported that during August, Transportation costs continued to rise, since the unit value of international freight was US$129 per ton, 63.7% higher than in the same period in 2021 (US$78.8 per ton) and an increase of 154 .4% compared to August 2020 (US$50.7 dollars).
