Agricultural associations: Energy costs threaten fruit and vegetable production

Rising energy costs are also causing problems for fruit and vegetable producers. Without financial help, it could have serious consequences for the industry, the farmers’ association warns.

In a joint appeal to Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens), the German Farmers’ Association and other agricultural associations warned of a collapse in fruit and vegetable production in view of rising energy prices.

“The exploding energy costs are endangering the existence of companies in the fruit, vegetable, horticultural and potato industries,” the letter said. Medium-sized and small companies in particular do not fall within the scope of aid programs and need industry-specific support, the associations demanded.

According to the associations, the high quality standards lead to energy-intensive production of fruit and vegetables. “However, companies cannot pass on the rising costs to the market, since the food trade is increasingly resorting to cheaper imported goods due to the decreasing purchasing power of consumers,” says the statement. As a result, jobs are also at risk and there could be supply bottlenecks in the long term.
