Energy supply: Scholz confirms: Will get through this winter

The gas storage facilities are full, the first LNG terminals are scheduled to go into operation from January: Chancellor Scholz sees Germany well prepared for the winter.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) considers Germany’s energy supply to be secure over the winter from the current perspective.

At a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the IG BCE trade union in Hanover, the conditions have been created with the switch to alternative gas supply sources and the construction of LNG terminals that has begun, as well as the continued operation of coal-fired power plants and the nuclear reserve. “All of this has contributed to the fact that we can now say: We will get through this winter. Who would have thought that a few months ago?”

Scholz confirmed estimates that there would probably be enough natural gas. “Our gas storage facilities are fuller than ever, more than 90 percent. And from January the first LNG terminals will go into operation on our coast.” German politics, business and society have resolutely countered an impending large-scale energy shortage as a result of the war in Ukraine: “We were successful together on this battlefield,” said Scholz.

Scholz wants to fight rapid inflation with determination

However, it is now important to fight the rapid inflation with the same determination. Scholz explained that the existing protective screens “will now be further developed and expanded. This is urgently needed.” The current level of energy costs cannot last. “What we have to do first of all: electricity prices, heating prices, gas prices have to go down. That’s the first task we have now.” IG-BCE boss Michael Vassiliadis also sits on a panel of experts on the gas price and market.

Today’s third-largest German trade union was formed in the fall of 1997 from the merger of the Chemical, Paper and Ceramic Trade Union, the Mining and Energy Trade Union and the Leather Trade Union. Scholz said at the anniversary event that the IG BCE plays an important role in shaping industrial transformation: “No other industrial union in our country is historically so closely linked to fossil production methods.” Nevertheless, she supports the “transition to the climate-neutral age” constructively.

Vassiliadis presented a plan for a “Project Future” in Hanover, which, among other things, is intended to combine ways to affordable energy with the increased expansion of renewables. He also spoke out in favor of continued sufficient investments by the state in the conversion of industry to more climate protection and digitization.
