In times of Corona, more people are trying to reduce contacts while on vacation. Your own car and camping sites are in demand.
The corona pandemic has spurred the trend towards vacationing in cocoons: According to an analysis by the ADAC, many tourists tried to reduce contact with their fellow human beings during the summer vacation – both when traveling and when choosing accommodation.
“You now want to be among yourself on the trip, maybe even to be alone,” said ADAC tourism director Karlheinz Jungbeck on Tuesday in Munich. “And in all price segments, that’s the amazing thing: From tent vacations and houseboats to yacht charter and flights in a private jet.” According to Jungbeck, this now leads to capacity problems, especially when camping, because the demand is greater than the supply.
Another indication of so-called “cocooning”: Many holidaymakers preferred their own car, so that, according to ADAC data, there were even more traffic jams than before the start of the pandemic. According to an estimate by the car club, the traffic jams on Germany’s motorways in July and August totaled a record-breaking total length of 244,000 kilometers – almost 80,000 kilometers more than in the comparatively quiet first Corona year 2020. But in 2019, the ADAC only measured 221,000 kilometers of traffic jams. “The car has experienced a real renaissance,” said Jungbeck.
