Avoid supermarkets, order online: The experiences from the lockdowns could also change grocery shopping in the long term, believes a digital association.
In the corona crisis, people in Germany also bought groceries online more often. That comes from the figures of a representative survey on behalf of the digital association Bitkom, which was published on Tuesday.
According to this, 26 percent of people in Germany currently order groceries on the Internet at least now and then – before the start of the pandemic it was only 16 percent. The association assumes that this trend is sustainable.
“The changes initiated by the corona crisis are also permanent in the food retail sector,” said Bitkom’s chief executive, Bernhard Rohleder. Digital shopping is particularly popular with younger people: almost a third (32 percent) of 16 to 29-year-olds often or at least occasionally order food, snacks or drinks online, and among 30 to 49-year-olds do too 36 percent a little more. The willingness of older people to order groceries on the web then decreases: Among people between 50 and 64 years of age, 26 percent use the online route, in the group of 65 and over it is only 8 percent.
Online farm shops and subscriptions for vegetable crates with ten percent each are popular. Eight percent buy in online supermarkets such as rewe.de, bringmeister.de or Amazon Fresh. Seven percent of those surveyed order groceries on platforms such as Ebay. Just as many (7 percent) already use the new delivery services with immediate service such as Gorillas and Flink, even if they are repeatedly criticized because of the poor working conditions for the drivers.
“During the corona pandemic, many people tried new ways to go shopping and bought groceries for the first time online,” comments Rohleder. “In the meantime, the uneasiness of shopping in a local store has subsided for many. Not only new business models such as express grocery deliveries in a few minutes are now ensuring that more people buy groceries online – completely independently of Corona. ”
