The Indian electric scooter manufacturer Ola Electric opens a new factory: it is only operated by women. The startup is employing 10,000 women for this purpose.
In the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the company Ola Electric is pulling up a new factory to manufacture electric scooters. The special thing about the “Futurefactory”, however, will be the workforce: According to the company, only women are employed there. In total there will be more than 10,000 employees. This was announced by one of the founders of the startup, Bhavish Aggarwal, in a blog post.
This should make the factory the world’s largest production facility in which only women work – and the only one of its kind in the automotive industry. Ola Electric has invested significantly in training the women, wrote Aggarwal: “They will be responsible for the entire production of every single vehicle.”
Promotion of women could increase gross domestic product
With this, the company wants to take a big step towards a more inclusive workforce and more economic opportunities for women. Offering women such opportunities not only improves their own quality of life, emphasized Aggarwal in the blog post: A study shows that equal rights for women in the workplace could increase the gross domestic product in India by 27 percent.
Construction of the factory should be completed by the end of next year. Then ten million electric scooters will be produced there annually. The first women started working in the factory that week. So far, the company has only been active on the Indian market. CEO Aggarwal’s stated goal is for all two-wheelers sold in India to be electrically powered by 2025.
This summer, Ola Electric, which is already being compared with Tesla in some media, presented a scooter for the first time that is also to be exported. However, due to technical problems, the start of sales planned for last week has been postponed.
