Energy crisis: Berlin initiative calls for expropriation of energy companies

Private companies are taking advantage of the current crisis to increase their profits, says the Berlin initiative “Deutsche Wohnen & Co. expropriate” – and by no means just mean the large housing groups.

The initiative “Deutsche Wohnen & Co. expropriate” in Berlin is now also calling for the socialization of energy companies. While the Senate is blocking the rapid implementation of the referendum on the expropriation of large housing companies, the energy crisis is putting additional strain on tenants, the initiative announced on Monday. Exactly one year ago to the day, she was successful with the referendum she initiated on expropriations in the housing industry in Berlin. In the voting parallel to the House of Representatives elections, a good 59 percent of voters voted in favor. “Even energy companies have to be incorporated,” says initiative spokesman Kalle Kunkel.

“The situation has gotten much worse since our referendum: rents are rising, electricity prices are rising and gas prices are exploding.” Many would not know how to get through the winter. “And meanwhile, the corporations continue to make hefty profits. They’re getting richer because we’re getting poorer – it has to stop now.”

Private companies took advantage of the current crisis to increase their profits. “And politicians are watching,” criticized Kunkel. At the same time, the initiative supports the demand for immediate measures such as an energy price cap, the ban on index-linked rental contracts and an immediate stop to terminations and forced evictions.
