Inflation in Spain falls sharply and touches 9% per year due to lower electricity prices

“This evolution is mainly due to the drop in electricity prices, which rose in September 2021,” the INE found in a statement, pending the final data, which will be known in a month.

“Although to a lesser extent, the decrease in fuels also influences, compared to the rise of the previous year, and the decrease in transport“, he added.

The estimated annual variation rate of core inflation (general index without unprocessed food or energy products) decreased two tenths, to 6.2%, the INE continued.

Spain multiplied in recent months the measures to sustain the purchasing power of households, such as fuel subsidies and part of public transport fares, or the rise in pensions.

The president of the government, the socialist Pedro Sanchez, estimated at almost 30,000 million euros (about 29,500 million dollars) the cost of these different aid plans, which is equivalent to 2.3% of the Gross Domestic Product of the country.
