Despite the jump in sales: the hospitality industry is still far below pre-crisis levels

The situation in the hospitality industry improved further in the summer, with a significant increase in sales compared to last year. However, the industry has not yet gotten over the pandemic.

The hospitality industry in Germany has by no means made up for the setbacks from the pandemic, despite another jump in sales in July.

It is true that innkeepers and hoteliers posted more revenue in July 2021, both price-adjusted (plus 20.8 percent) and nominally (plus 21.3 percent) than in June of the current year, as the Federal Statistical Office has calculated. Even compared to July 2020, which was more severely affected by corona restrictions, according to the Wiesbaden authority on Monday, there was an increase in sales of 3.5 percent in real terms and 3.8 percent in nominal terms.

Over the year as a whole, however, the industry is still lagging significantly behind: From January to July 2021 inclusive, sales were price-adjusted (real) 28.7 percent below the level of the first seven months of 2020, nominally the minus 26.4 percent.

This is mainly due to the fact that at the beginning of 2020, before the outbreak of the corona pandemic in Germany, hotels and restaurants were still open without restriction for almost three months. In July 2021, sales in the catering and accommodation sector were still 23.5 percent below the level of February 2020, the month before the outbreak of the pandemic in Germany.
