The e-bike boom in Germany continued to pick up speed during the Corona crisis: According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 7.1 million electric bicycles were in private households at the beginning of 2021.
That was 1.2 million or 20 percent more than a year earlier, as the Wiesbaden authority announced on Tuesday.
E-bikes are distributed among almost 5.1 million households, so that mathematically around every eighth private household (13 percent) in Germany owns at least one electric bike. At the beginning of 2020, it was still every ninth household (11 percent). The comparatively expensive companions can be found especially among high-income earners: In households with a monthly income of more than 3500 euros, there was at least one electric bicycle in every fifth household (20 percent).
According to the Federal Office, around 30 million households and thus 79 percent of all households in Germany owned bicycles or electric bicycles at the beginning of 2021.
