He sees himself as a “protective shield for consumers,” said Rewe Austria boss Marcel Haraszti today in the “Ö1-Morgenjournal”. He rejected the fact that Rewe had tightened the price screw even with its own brands such as “Clever”, as brand manufacturers claim. It is true, however, that the retail group is willing to pay a little more for domestic goods than for the offers of international brand groups. Haraszti emphasized that in the current crisis everyone has to do their part – with retail having a range of one to two percent, but brand manufacturers up to 20 or 30 percent. Rewe itself has already reacted to its own margins.

Haraszti did not want to comment on the fact that the competitor Spar says it has no problems with its brand manufacturers. In any case, Rewe’s warehouses are currently full, he emphasized. The response to rising prices and customers’ increasing price sensitivity was to increase the number of “Clever” products and discounts.
Regarding energy saving, the Rewe Austria boss said that the retail group was working on energy efficiency, but shorter opening times were not an issue. An hour less would hardly bring anything and is not customer-friendly.
