Study: The board needs the first woman as an “icebreaker”

A study by the Allbright Foundation shows that things are going much more slowly for medium-sized companies listed in the MDAX and SDAX. As of September 1, three DAX companies had a balanced ratio of men and women on the Management Board for the first time: Continental, Fresenius Medical Care and Siemens Healthineers. At Beiersdorf, Deutsche Telekom and Mercedes-Benz, the share is 40 percent. More than half of the 160 companies from the DAX, MDAX and SDAX stock indices still have no board members. Almost all are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the SDAX and MDAX.

According to the foundation board members Wiebke Ankersen and Christian Berg, it is important to secure the best women. The DAX companies are currently doing this best. It is becoming increasingly difficult for SMEs: “The trend that top managers prefer to choose companies in which there are already women on the management team was confirmed again this year.”

Ten female CEOs

In the DAX companies, the proportion of women on the executive boards rose by 2.8 percentage points to 20.2 percent. In the MDAX and SDAX, the proportion of women on the executive boards stagnated at 11.3 and 10.4 percent, respectively.

The number of women chairmen increased from eight to nine. After September 1, Carla Kriwet became CEO of Fresenius Med Care. One in four new board members was recently recruited for finance – according to the study, often a stepping stone to top positions.
