In the pandemic, Google was one of the first companies to send their employees almost everywhere to the home office. Now the company has bought an office building in New York – for the equivalent of around 1.8 billion euros
Despite the trend towards working from home, Google is spending more than two billion dollars buying an office building in New York. It should be the heart of a building complex of the Internet company in southwest Manhattan, wrote CFO Ruth Porat in a blog entry on Tuesday.
The building called St. John’s Terminal – an expanded former freight yard – has already been rented by Google. Now the group uses the opportunity to buy it for 2.1 billion dollars (around 1.8 billion euros).
New York is already Google’s second largest location
With 12,000 employees, New York is already the second largest Google location outside of the headquarters in Mountain View, California.

In the pandemic, Google was one of the first companies to send their employees almost everywhere to the home office. With the spread of the more contagious Delta variant, the return to the offices has been postponed until January. At the same time, Google – like the vast majority of the rest of the tech industry – is preparing for hybrid working models. In the expensive Silicon Valley in particular, many employees took the opportunity to move to other US regions where they can live more cheaply.
