In June 2020 the government adopted the “National Hydrogen Strategy”. We are now looking back positively on the projects that have been initiated. But it also becomes clear: the pace must be increased.
A good year after the start of its “National Hydrogen Strategy”, the federal government draws a positive interim balance.
According to a first interim report that was passed in the Federal Cabinet, the strategy has been pushed forward with vigor and important foundations for investments from the economy and for research initiatives have been created.
It refers, among other things, to 62 “large-scale hydrogen projects”, which would be funded with a total of eight billion euros. These range from projects for hydrogen generation, for use in transport to industrial applications. “We have launched major projects in many areas,” said Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) of the German Press Agency. But it is also clear that the pace of entry into a green hydrogen economy will have to be increased even further in the next few years.
The federal government’s hydrogen commissioner, Stefan Kaufmann (CDU), also called for further efforts. In order to become the “leading market and leading provider of green hydrogen technologies” internationally, one has to do a lot more, he told the dpa. Kaufmann called for an immediate program, for example with model regions for green hydrogen and “a right of way for investments in innovative hydrogen solutions in licensing and regulatory law”.
The federal government decided on the strategy in June 2020. It provides billions in grants, legal relief and specific production targets. The focus is on so-called green hydrogen, which is obtained exclusively from renewable energy. It can serve as a basis for fuels and fuels, for example in order to replace the use of coal, oil and natural gas in industry and transport.
