Thus, the seizure of the cargo containers was a mega blow to smuggling and trademark fraud, since the market value of the various merchandise amounts to US$5.6 million, or $850 million pesos.
The Minister of Economy then stated: “I want to congratulate AFIP and Customs for the work done. The main objective is to protect the national industry: we see a lot of imports and contraband items hidden in other items. We are accompanied by the Argentine Toy Chamber, the people who work in optics, the CGERA. We need to take care of the Argentine dollars, protect the reserves; give confidence, strength and credibility to our currency and that our industry does not have to compete with unfairly imported merchandise, with contraband”.
The procedure is already in court and within the containers opened by tax order there was a wide range of products in violation: machines for mining cryptocurrencies, prods, pepper spray, toys and cosmetics, among others.
William Michael, General Director of Customs, congratulated the agents involved and highlighted the impact of the operation: “These actions make me proud because they protect the national industry and put a stop to unfair competition. Customs will continue to put a stop to everything that threatens the transparency of international trade.”
In addition, he stressed that the kidnapping is part of a policy of protecting people’s health – there were merchandise that, due to the lack of previous interventions, represented a potential danger: “from toys, socks and optics to cattle prods,” he noted.
