Gas prices have been soaring for months. Consumers are also feeling the effects of this. Now the EU countries want to consult.
The EU countries are preoccupied with the rise in energy prices and the effects on consumers.
EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said on Wednesday before a meeting of the responsible ministries of the EU countries in Slovenia that they have ideas on how to tackle the problem, but will first consult. Austria’s Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler said the answer to high gas prices is to switch to renewable energies more quickly. This also creates independence from Russian gas imports, for example. Simson emphasized after the meeting that the Commission would present proposals in the coming weeks as to which measures the EU countries could take to react to rising energy prices.
Wholesale prices for natural gas have been skyrocketing for months. In many places, consumers are already feeling this. According to the comparison portals Verivox and Check24, numerous regional gas providers have announced price increases for the autumn. Natural gas is the main driver of energy prices, which were almost a quarter higher in August than a year earlier. According to the European trade union confederation ETUC, it is feared that more than 2.7 million people in Europe could not afford to heat their homes properly at the start of the heating season, even though they had a job.
Before the meeting, the Spanish government asked the EU Commission to develop guidelines that national governments could use as a guide in order to react to the rise in prices. The situation jeopardizes a fair switch to climate-friendly energy, according to a letter to the EU Commission, which is available to the German Press Agency.
The Federal Ministry of Economics announced: “We do not comment on specific proposals or projects from other member states.” Monitor the situation on the gas market continuously.
