What is the bioeconomy and how are investments progressing in Argentina?

The bioeconomy is the production based on knowledge and the use of biological resources, processes and methods to provide goods and services in a sustainable way in all sectors of the economy, According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, also known as FAO.

This model is based on the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources into products with added value and through this activity bioproducts, bioenergy and services can be generated.

In Argentina, concrete sustainable Bioeconomy projects are already in operation in Santa Fe, Chubut and Jujuy, through articulations between the different levels of State and the private sector.

The Federal Bioeconomy Summit

The Federal Bioeconomy Summit was a meeting point for the provinces to present the work they have been doing from the different regions to diversify the energy matrix and projects related to bioproducts, bioenergy and services.

Santa Fe, for example, contributes to the energy transition with the contribution of private sector actors that provide inputs and central equipment in Vaca Muerta for oil and gas technology.as warned by the governor Omar Perotti.

In Chubut, the provincial administration launched an initiative to generate energy through biomass, a pioneering milestone in the country, also unique in Latin America.

The Patagonian province will seek to replace diesel oil and liquefied petroleum gas with forest biomass, a green, sustainable and clean resource that originates from the waste that comes from forest management.

In this regard, the governor Mariano Arcioni maintained that this action will allow the province “save more than 3 million dollars per year”, a benefit that is added to other advantages that the project will grant, for example the opportunity to minimize risks or directly avoid fires.

The Minister of Science and Technology also participated in the call Daniel Filmus, the interior minister Edward of Peter and the governor of Jujuy, Gerard Morales.

The latter stressed that Jujuy contributes to the development of renewable energy, a front that he exemplified with the mention of the Cauchari solar panel plant, currently the largest in South America, and the production of lithium, a mineral that will allow it to multiply its exports.

In this regard, he indicated: “Jujuy, Salta and Catamarca in the next four years we will be exporting 10 billion dollars in lithium alone.”
