Although in commercial SMEs the situation presents an improvement for women, there is still a long way to go to achieve equality. During this 2022, 25.7% of businesses are owned by women, compared to 52.3% owned by men, and 20.7% run by people of both genders. Compared to the previous year, the incidence of women in business ownership remained practically the same: from 25.9% in 2021 it went to 25.7% this year. In terms of participation,l 50.3% of the businesses surveyed indicated that decisions are made by a woman or a woman and a man.
Gender gap in items
On the other hand, the gender gap can be seen very clearly in the areas in which women entrepreneurs venture. The items most represented by industrial SMEs are “Footwear and leather goods” (30.8%) and “Paper, cardboard, publishing and printing” (16.7%). The least are “Food and beverages” (7.1%) and “Chemical substances and products” (5.9%). In other words, industrial women entrepreneurs have a greater presence in lighter industries.
As for commerce, the gap becomes more noticeable as women predominate in areas traditionally linked to the feminine. 53% of the “Clothing, lingerie and accessories” stores belong to women, the same as 50% of the “Perfume and cosmetics” stores. On the other hand, the items least represented by the female sex are “Electro, electronic items, computers and cell phones” (6%) and “Tires, car and motorcycle parts” (9%).
