Oliver Mintzlaff: Red Bulls strong man from Leipzig

Who will lead Red Bull after the death of Dietrich Mateschitz? Since yesterday, Friday, there has been an answer to this question, which has been asked frequently since the founder’s death two weeks ago: a managerial team is taking over the operational management of the group (more on page 11). The name that stands out is that of Oliver Mintzlaff. The 47-year-old German will coordinate the sports world of the beverage manufacturer from November 15 – according to media reports, at Mateschitz’s personal request.

Mintzlaff, who comes from near Bonn, is a familiar face in the Red Bull universe. Since 2014 he has been managing director of the football club RB Leipzig, whose main sponsor is Red Bull. Leipzig was playing in the second division at the time, Mintzlaff accompanied the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga and was jointly responsible for successes such as winning the DFB Cup in 2022.

The married father of one child will remain in the club of ÖFB legionnaires Xaver Schlager and Konrad Laimer, he will be a member of the supervisory board in the future. He also gets deep insights in his new role. Mintzlaff will be responsible for “Corporate Projects and Investments” at Red Bull, i.e. he will be responsible for all sports activities. These include the football clubs in Leipzig, Salzburg and New York, the two ice hockey clubs in Munich and Salzburg and the Formula 1 team led by world champion Max Verstappen. In the future he will also act as head of the television station ServusTV.

In the past, Mintzlaff has demonstrated the stamina that he will also need at the helm of Red Bull: The long-distance runner took part in the half-marathon world championships twice. The business administration graduate worked for the sporting goods manufacturer Puma for eight years. As managing director of Ferber Marketing, he not only looked after the ex-Leipzig coach and now ÖFB team manager Ralf Rangnick, but also the pop singer Andrea Berg.
