Parcel service providers push the pace: A study commissioned by the Federal Network Agency shows how quickly most people are on the road and delivering parcels.

In Germany, four out of five packages reach their recipient on the next working day. This is the result of an investigation commissioned by the Federal Network Agency and published on Wednesday.

“On average over the year, the majority of parcels were delivered no later than the second working day after posting. This means that the legal requirements are met,” said Klaus Müller, President of the Authority, according to a statement.

The transit times of parcel shipments from the five largest parcel service providers (DHL, DPD, GLS, Hermes and UPS) were examined in the period from July 2021 to June 2022. National standard shipments from companies to consumers were taken into account. Amazon parcels were not taken into account because, according to the network agency, the tracking data for these parcels was not accessible to third parties.

The Postal Universal Service Ordinance (PUDLV) stipulates that on average at least 80 percent of parcels in Germany must be delivered on the second working day. In the first study, 96.1 percent of the parcels had already been delivered on the second working day after they had been posted. Müller described the quality of parcel delivery in Germany as “enjoyable overall”.
