Casinos Austria want to become more digital

He appreciates Austria and tradition, but this sometimes stands in the way of innovation, said yesterday Erwin van Lambaart, General Manager of Casinos Austria since April, when presenting the new strategy.

The digitization of the company is an essential part of this strategy. “Xperience Zones” are planned in the casinos in Baden, Bregenz and at two other locations. In these casino areas you can already play with small stakes. In addition, the “entertainment value” should also be increased. He does not accept the accusation that this is attracting a new clientele who are becoming addicted to gambling.

Because player protection at Casinos Austria is to be further strengthened. Even stricter standards will apply from April 2023. Younger casino visitors are particularly at risk. Van Lambaart refers to the corresponding data from the Netherlands, whereby only around one percent of visitors are prone to slipping into gambling addiction.

The company also struggles with illegal competition in online gaming. He does not understand that many online gambling providers are active in Austria, even though these activities are illegal. “We only have a market share of 50 percent online,” says van Lambaart. He therefore continues to advocate appropriate measures to prevent this.

Application for all locations

When the licenses for the casinos in Austria are reassigned in 2027 and 2030, Casinos Austria wanted to apply for all twelve locations. It is currently not known what the licensing procedure will look like. But so far, Casinos Austria has understood well how to reconcile gambling and social responsibility, said van Lambaart. For example, he wants to further expand sports sponsorship. People with disabilities should also be supported to the same extent.
