US bans import of Chinese equipment from Huawei and ZTE

Both companies were included in 2021 in a list of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that considers them “an unacceptable risk” to the national security of the United Statesas well as Dahua and Hikvision, providers of video surveillance equipment, and Hytera Communications, specialized in radio equipment.

US authorities have shown increasing caution in recent years around Chinese telecom companies and technology.

Products already authorized by the FCC will remain so, at least for now. The agency is considering examining current authorizations as well as review procedures for announced bans.

“These new rules represent an important part of the actions put in place to protect the American people against threats to national security involving telecommunications equipment”said the president of the FCC, Jessica Rosenworcel, quoted in a statement.

Along the same lines as his predecessor Donald Trump, the Joe Biden administration has a very closed position on Chinese telecommunications equipment, which is suspected of serving espionage purposes for Beijing.

Previously, Washington had prohibited Huawei from being a provider of systems at the service of the US governmentand also strongly discouraged the use of such equipment in the private sector, fearing it was being tapped by Chinese intelligence.

In 2019, Huawei was placed on a trade blacklist that prohibited US suppliers from doing business with this companywhich left the Chinese company out of Google’s Android operating system used in mobile devices.
