In the US, a woman is suing the maker of a microwave dish for $5 million in damages. The reason: the indication of the preparation time of 3.5 minutes on the packaging is said to be incorrect.
When hunger knocks on the stomach wall, but there is not enough time to fill the digestive organ with a balanced meal, many people resort to a quick alternative in everyday life. Bag soups or frozen pizza are at the top of the list for many Germans. In the US, on the other hand, microwave food like macaroni & cheese is very popular.
The food manufacturer “Kraft Heinz Foods” produces such a product called “Velveeta – Shells & Cheese”. It is a plastic cup filled with pasta, cheese sauce and plenty of preservatives. The contents can be prepared within a short time in the microwave and are ready to eat. This brand’s packaging advertises that it will do so in just three and a half minutes.
$5 million lawsuit
A Florida woman is now planning to file a $5 million class action lawsuit because the timeline would give false promises. The woman’s attorneys claim the 3.5 minutes is just the reheating time in the microwave and doesn’t take into account the other steps involved in the preparation.
This also includes removing the lid, opening and filling the sauce from a small bag, adding tap water – and at the end the contents of the cup also have to be stirred.
The maker of the microwave menu described the lawsuit as “frivolous” in a statement. The lawyers surrounding the plaintiff argue that it is misleading marketing and that the product is being sold at a significant premium.
Customers would pay more money for this claim than they would otherwise. According to the lawsuit, Kraft Heinz Foods should refrain from paying misleading advertising in addition to paying $5 million.
