Transport: UK: Rail strikes announced over Christmas

It’s about higher wages and better working conditions. Because there has not yet been an amicable agreement with the employers, the RMT union has announced strikes over the holidays.

Train travelers in Great Britain will probably have to be prepared for cancellations and delays over the bank holidays. The Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) union on Tuesday announced a strike that would last from Christmas Eve to December 27. The dispute with the privatized train companies about higher wages and better working conditions, in which the British government also plays a role, has been going on for months. Strikes have also been announced for a number of days before Christmas.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch told the BBC: “We don’t want that to happen over Christmas.” However, you have no choice. It is still hoped that the employers will come up with a better offer and that the strike can be called off. “But we’ve been waiting for this since the summer.”

The British government has defended the existing offer of an eight percent wage increase over two years as a “very good deal”. However, workers argue that this is not enough given high inflation of more than 11 percent, but an “assault on working people”.

Labor disputes are also raging in a number of other sectors in Great Britain: Health service workers, postmen and cleaning and security staff from various railway companies, among others, want to lay down their jobs before Christmas.
