Alberto Fernández revived the idea of a common Central Bank

In the Foreign Ministry they insist that the primary objective will be “consolidate the unity of the block”. For this, in economic terms, they are betting on a series of initiatives in strategic sectors that could be undertaken through the Business Forum, such as projects in sustainable mobility, agriculture, mining, and regional vaccine manufacturing. But this Tuesday Alberto Fernández doubled the bet and revived the idea of a common Central Bank.

This project had been discussed with the Brazilian government, specifically with the Minister of Economy of that country, Paulo Guedes. But it is also part of an ambitious integration plan that Ambassador Scioli presented to both Lula’s and Bolsonaro’s teams. Although the conversations are incipient, there is a certain agreement, bilateral and on both sides of the Rio de Janeiro political rift, on the need to generate instruments that go in this direction.

The integration plan reported by Ámbito weeks ago also considers other options to reinforce the financial level, such as the implementation of a swap and even a payment system for imports with local currencies. Scioli himself, in an interview with Radio 10, explained that there have already been meetings between the central banks of both countries to analyze the initiatives.

The debate that Alberto Fernández refloated yesterday made Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou uncomfortable. Lacalle Pou was ironic about the issue and said that “today we cannot talk about it when we see the monetary difficulties that we have in the countries, it is advancing more than we can ”.

Uruguay backed down

After the crossings that took place in the previous days due to the new attempt by Uruguay that seeks to join unilaterally to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement of Trans-Pacific Association, Lacalle Pou reiterated on three occasions that there will be no rupture of the bloc. “That must be removed from the collective imagination, it is about resolving tensions,” he said.

Previously, President Fernández had recognized that Mercosur’s problem is the asymmetries between member countries, especially in terms of industrial development. However, he said that “the solution is not for each one to do their own”, in clear reference to the position of “relaxing” the bloc that Uruguay has been promoting.
