Tariffs: The rail union EVG makes new tariff demands

The wage conflict at the railways is far from off the table. After the successful conclusion of the train drivers’ union GDL, the larger EVG is now also making demands.

The wage conflict at Deutsche Bahn continues to smolder. After the deal with the train drivers’ union GDL, the competing railway and transport union (EVG) wants to renegotiate with the group.

“We are calling on the railway in a package of demands to go into collective bargaining immediately and quickly because we want to reach a quick deal,” said EVG boss Klaus-Dieter Hommel on Friday to the German press agency. “We want to use this to restore peace at work as quickly as possible.”

The federal board decided on a package with several demands, including a corona premium of 1500 euros, improved pension benefits, an annual mobility allowance of 100 euros and a higher contribution from the company to the joint social fund. In addition, the degree should apply to the entire workforce.

If the railway rejects negotiations or if no result is achieved, the EVG will use its contractually guaranteed special right of termination of the existing collective agreement, said Hommel. This would abolish the peace obligation and strikes would be possible.

The EVG had agreed on a collective agreement with the railway a year ago. Among other things, this provides for 1.5 percent higher wages and salaries from 2022 and an employment guarantee for employees. Due to the high financial corona damage to the railway, the EVG had agreed to the comparatively moderate deal as part of an alliance with the group and the federal government.

The GDL, which is competing with the EVG, did not join this alliance and after three rounds of strikes this summer achieved its own conclusion that goes beyond that of the EVG.
