Applying for a Corona break: This is how the state-subsidized family vacation works

From October 1, 2021, families can take a few days of heavily discounted vacation as part of the new “Corona break”. The state pays 90 percent of the cost of accommodation. The program runs until the end of 2022.

For many families, the Corona period was a particular burden, so the state is now starting a funding program for discounted family holidays. From October 1, 2021, families with small and medium incomes can travel for seven days as part of the “Corona break for families” and only have to pay ten percent of the cost of accommodation. The federal government takes on the remaining 90 percent. This is how the “Corona break” works:

How do I book the Corona break?

Interested families must first contact a family holiday home and inquire about vacancies. Youth hostels, family holiday villages and similar institutions from all over Germany take part in the program. The Ministry of Family Affairs has compiled all participating institutions, including contact details, in one. The holiday resort then sends the families a Corona time-out form and checks the authorization.

Who can take the Corona break?

Families who have their main residence in Germany and are entitled to child benefit are eligible for funding. In addition, a certain household income must not be exceeded, whereby the income limits depend on the number and age of the children. For example, a couple with two children aged 3 and 8 years may earn a maximum of 5576 euros gross per month. A couple with a three-year-old can earn a maximum of 4,340 euros. Slightly lower income limits apply to single parents. If a child or parent has a disability of at least 50 percent, income does not matter.

In what period and how often can I travel?

The travel period for “Corona time-outs” runs from October 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. The time-out can be taken once per calendar year and may last a maximum of seven days. So seven days in 2021 and another seven days in 2022 would be possible, but not four days this year and another three days also this year.

What costs do I have to pay myself?

The co-payment for accommodation and meals is ten percent. In addition, everyone has to organize and pay for their own arrival and departure. In addition, there may be small extra items such as visitor’s tax, fee for bed linen and towels and separate beverage costs. Leisure and wellness activities of the respective accommodation can also cost extra.

Where can I find more information?

The Federal Ministry of Family Affairs has put together detailed information and answers to the most important questions. There is also an income calculator that serves as an orientation as to whether you can take a Corona break. Questions can also be answered by telephone on the hotline number: 0800-8661159.
