The German job market continues to pick up. An evaluation of job advertisements shows which industries are particularly sought after.
If you look at the numbers on the labor market, you won’t see much of the corona crisis. In September the number of unemployed fell by 114,000 compared to August and by 382,000 compared to September 2020. “The good labor market trend continues,” says the current monthly report of the Federal Employment Agency.
The statisticians of the employment agency speak of an autumn recovery, with unemployment and underemployment falling significantly, even after seasonal adjustment. At the same time, the number of short-time workers continues to decrease. The influence of the corona crisis on the numbers is still visible, but is getting smaller. And above all: “The reported demand for new employees remained high in September.”
Plus 70 percent job advertisements
The figures from the official statistics match what the Stepstone job portal is currently seeing in the job advertisements. According to an analysis by the job portal, 70 percent more new positions are currently being advertised than a year ago. After a year full of uncertainty, Stepstone now sees the best opportunities for job changers, especially for career changers. “The current job situation is ideal for all those who are considering doing something completely different. Be it trying a new job or switching to another industry,” says Stepstone expert Tobias Zimmermann.
The fact that companies want to hire can also be seen in the area in which the number of new jobs has increased particularly. In human resources, the number has doubled since September last year, reports Stepstone. There is a great need, especially in recruiting. But the job portal also doubled its numbers in the purchasing and logistics sectors. In addition, there is a desperate search in the craft sector, the demand for craftspeople rose by 84 percent. In administration (plus 74 percent) and in sales (plus 41 percent) there is an increasing need for reinforcements.
The fact that the number of newly placed job advertisements has so exploded compared to the previous year has in part to do with the fact that the corona situation a year ago was much more uncertain than it is today. But even in comparison with the pre-Corona figures from the beginning of March, Stepstone is currently seeing more new job advertisements. Good conditions to shake off the last remnants of the Corona damper on the job market. The statisticians of the employment agency estimate that the number of unemployed is currently still increased by around 230,000 due to the Corona crisis. At its peak, in summer 2020, the corona effect was still 640,000 additional unemployed despite short-time working.
