Pellet prices are falling too late for winter

Pellet prices are falling too late for winter

After the price for wood pellets “really exploded” in the summer and consumers had not received any fixed prices from suppliers in the past few months, according to the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK), price reductions have been observed for the first time since summer. A price comparison is also possible again.

For months, the providers of the performing AK had not reported any prices. At EUR 567 per ton, prices are currently more than twice as high as in the previous year (EUR 264). According to the AK, consumers would of course have had to cover their pellet requirements in summer or autumn at the sometimes high prices.

The Federal Competition Authority is already examining the price increase for pellets. If there were price agreements, consumers would have to receive compensation, according to the AK. In addition, “an objective database that can be called up online for the prices of different heating media is needed in order to ensure transparency, competition and fair prices in the long term,” says AK President Andreas Stangl.

Only a few companies would currently take part in the AK price comparison. A legal basis for a corresponding pellet, heating oil and liquid gas price database, similar to E-Control’s fuel or gas price calculator, is to be created in the Price Transparency Act.
