Müller raise the alarm about energy costs

“Some of the increases are as much as sixfold. You can’t earn anything anymore,” says the federal spokesman for the mills, Herbert Wiesbauer. A colleague in the industry now pays 100,000 euros per month for electricity in his company instead of 20,000.

The local companies would be in tough competition with Bavarian companies anyway. From January 1, 2023, the situation would worsen again when the electricity price per kilowatt hour would only be 13 cents there due to the energy price cap decided by the German federal government. “We compare it to 44 cents,” says Wiesbauer.

He fears that in Austria there will only be a cost subsidy afterwards. “But we need production reliability. How are we supposed to be able to calculate if we don’t know what energy really costs?” says Wiesbauer, who runs his own mill in Mörschwang. From January 1st, energy prices need to be acceptable, like in Germany, in order to remain competitive.

In addition, the rising costs could no longer be accommodated in the calculation because the retail price for flour has doubled from around 40 to 80 cents per kilo due to the raw materials and operating resources that have become more expensive.
