Paolo Rocca and Sergio Massa agreed on the need to reach consensus

With this conviction I announce that “We are going to end the year investing 1,100 million dollars and next year it will be 1,400 million.”

At the time, thatassured the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa that the first section of the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline will be finished by June 20, 2023.

This was one of the good news that the head of the Palacio de Hacienda had this Thursday. He received praise for how he is handling the economy from both Paolo Roca like the economist Carlos Melconian.

Hours later, the inflation rate for November was released, which stood at 4.9%, well below most of the private forecasts.

In his speech, Massa anticipated that the reserves of the Central Bank would be located at US$7,000 million by the end of the year – some US$1,000 above the commitment assumed with the IMF-.

This gave rise to assure SME entrepreneurs that they will be able to increase their imports by “10% above the volumes of this year. Massa stated: “If they plan with these values, they will not have problems importing, neither with the deadlines nor with the volumes”.

Most of the attendees agreed on the need for the leaders to agree “at least on one point” to chart a path of stable growth, although no one was betting much that it could be achieved.

For this reason, Massa’s words were generally liked when he stated: “In order to build consensus, in addition to having a country perspective and development project, it is also necessary to have the courage to accept criticism from one’s own, because ultimately, building consensus is giving up part of one’s own to go looking for the other”were his words that some interpreted as referring to Horacio Rodriguez Larreta.

These concepts were valued by Rocca when he said: speak out for consensus and have the courage to face internal criticism in a world that tends to polarize with a way of making yourself heard. It is an issue that we are seeing not only in Argentina. And, this issue greatly affects the construction of a State vision for the transformation of a country. That’s why I fully share what you said and I appreciate your look at building.”

At the subsequent lunch and when the minister had already retired, the businessmen agreed that Massa had a candidate’s speech, but with a certain dose of realism “who can imagine what will happen next year”, was the phrase most heard in reference to to political uncertainty.

That’s why they rescued when the minister said “Argentina’s economy and development are an opportunity to build consensus. I am willing to give in on what I think, but there must also be courage to sit at the table, not thinking of saying harsh phrases to please the harsh, but putting intelligent ideas on the table to develop the country. More than one assistant interpreted that he referred to candidates as Patricia Bullrich or Javier Milei.

At another point in his presentation, Massa made reference to the existing prejudice in the country regarding “field vs. Industry” large companies vs. SMEs, among others: “Countries that develop develop because they internationalize their companies. Argentina needs 30 or 40 examples like Arcor or Techint, because they give the possibility to the entire ecosystem.”

Of course, current issues were part of his presentation when he anticipated that “it would be a lie to suggest that they can be resolved in the short term” and recalled that the current exchange restrictions are necessary given the current weakness of the Central Bank.
