2022 is “a turning point in the history of energy”

The world has been in the midst of its first global energy crisis since Russia invaded Ukraine. That’s what Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Monday in front of almost 300 guests in the dome hall of the Vienna University of Technology. The year 2022 could not only be remembered badly, but also as a “turning point in the history of energy”.

“This is a crisis in which the energy transition is the solution and not the problem. But there are still great uncertainties about how this crisis will develop,” said Birol, who was invited by the “Austrian Chapter – Club of Rome” , the World Energy Council Austria, the Vienna University of Technology, the Climate and Energy Fund and the Ministry of Climate Protection and presented the “World Energy Outlook” published in October. Global emissions from fossil fuels are projected to peak in 2025 and decline at least slightly by 2050. In the next five years, as many new renewable energy plants are planned globally as have been built in the past 20 years.

Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler spoke of a “break in the times”.
