Verbund boss Strugl: There is a lack of space for green energy

“What we lack is the space,” he said yesterday, Wednesday, in the Club of Business Journalists in Vienna.

One is constantly confronted with projects being blocked or delayed, said Strugl. Individual federal states are “very cautious”. Strugl positively highlighted Burgenland, where Verbund is building a plant together with Burgenland Energie to produce green hydrogen from green electricity.

1.8 billion euros skimmed off

The federal government will skim off between two and four billion euros in profits from energy companies, which they achieve thanks to high energy prices. The association expects – with the corresponding forecast uncertainty – to skim off profits of EUR 1.8 billion in Austria and EUR 300 million in Germany, divided equally between 2023 and 2024.

According to the Verbund boss, the low water levels in the rivers in Austria will continue after the summer. The group generates around 90 percent of its electricity from hydropower, and in the future 20 to 25 percent of the electricity will be generated by wind turbines and photovoltaic systems. The severe drought hit Verbund economically. It is therefore extremely important to broaden the electricity mix.
