Christmas sales: the numbers for 2022

Of the 6 large items relieved, Cosmetics and Perfumery (+2.1%), Audio, video, cell phone equipment and accessories (+4.2%) and Toy stores (+3.4%) grew and they fell Footwear (-5.1%), Clothing (-14.4%) and Bookstores (-7.5%).

This Christmas, at 76.8% of the businesses measured did the same or better than expected, 3.6 percentage points above last year (73.2%)although he stressed that the expectations at these parties were moderate.

Due to the tighter margins and some uncertainty about the replacement costs of post-party merchandise, there were shortage of promotions. Only half of business of the sample made somewhen in 2021 almost 70% of these offered something.

The average ticket was $9,410with the amount higher in Audio, video, cell phones and accessories ($10,985) and the lowest in Bookstores ($5,222).

On the occasion of this Christmas survey, also retailers were consulted about the effect of the Qatar 2022 World Cup on sales. Over there, 44% commented that it was regularthe 25% of them reported negative or bad consequencesthe 21% recorded good effectsthe 6% very bad and lastly the remaining 5% very good.

These effects were explained in a 29% for the number of people on the street and 20% for the festivities of winning the World Cup, which included a holiday that limited the presence of consumers and workers in retail businesses.

A 18% commented about effect of the limited purchasing power of wagesa 16% assigned their response to street closures and traffic problemsand the 17% remaining determined other effects not listed among the options.

The data comes from a survey carried out by CAME between Friday 23 and Saturday 24 December in 232 SME businesses in the country.

How did each item do in Christmas sales?

But not all the items showed the same difficulties or performance:

In the case of clothing, lingerie and accessoriesI know contracted 14.4% in constant prices compared to 2021. One of the main claims of this sector was the increase in illegal sales, particularly in large cities.

The household appliances and electronic items increased by 4.2% at constant prices. However, they accused of shortages due to the closure of imports, although they stressed that sales were also boosted by the World Cup more than by Christmas.

The sales of footwear and leather goods decreased by 5.1% and 79% of those surveyed said they were affected by the World Cup and the drop in purchasing power in second place.

For their part, toy stores sold 3.4% more than in 2021 at constant prices. Only 57% of the businesses did some promotion.

In the case of bookstoressales contracted 7.5% at constant prices. 73% of stores indicated that they did the same or better than expected. Only 38% of the businesses made promotions and added that sales increased over the hour.

Judgment of the Court on Coparticipation

For CAME, “as a federal business union institution, calls for the responsibility of the political leadership to find a solution to the conflict whose consequences, beyond political issues, will have a direct impact on the Argentine population”.

“The entity expresses the urgent need to establish a mechanism for distribution of equitable resources for all the provinces of the national territory”concluded the letter.
