Local fish on the table

Edible fish production in Austria continues to show an upward trend: in 2021, around 5,000 tons of trout, char, carp and the like from aquaculture were sold.

According to Statistics Austria, this corresponds to an increase of nine percent compared to the previous year. The number of producers rose by three percent to 542. Breeders report increased demand for fillets and processed products such as smoked trout.

The most important fish species in terms of quantity were rainbow and salmon trout (plus 14 percent to 1736 tons), brook trout (plus 11 percent to 685 tons), carp (minus 0.6 percent to 617 tons), brook and lake trout (plus 4 percent to 503 tons), African catfish (down one percent to 494 tons), Alsatian char (up 8 percent to 394 tons) and arctic char (up 4.5 percent to 281 tons).

The main reasons for production losses were predators such as otters, herons and cormorants, water shortages and storm damage.
