Price increase: Authority makes decision: mailing of letters will be more expensive

The Federal Network Agency gives the green light – for a price increase at the post office. Sending letters can become more expensive. But nothing should change until January.

Postage for letters is becoming more expensive. The Federal Network Agency published a scope for price increases on Wednesday, on the basis of which Deutsche Post can increase its postage.

It is certain that the Bonn-based company will do that. Said margin for increases is 4.6 percent – the shopping cart for all types of letters can be more expensive by this percentage amount, be it standard letters, maxi letters, large letters or postcards.

The value is relatively low, with the postage increase in 2019 it was 8.9 percent. At that time, for example, the postage for a standard letter increased by 10 cents to 80 cents. Swiss Post will decide how much the postage will increase for the standard letter on January 1st.

The President of the Federal Network Agency, Jochen Homann, spoke of “room for moderate price increases”. The new postage is to apply for three years from January 2022.

The mail market has been shrinking for a long time in the digital age. People write significantly fewer letters than in the past and instead use e-mails, chats or social media more in their communication. However, the mail business is still a lucrative business for the Bonn company – this is also due to the price increases approved by the state.
