The unemployment rate in Upper Austria was four percent on average for 2022. This was announced by the Public Employment Service (AMS) on Monday. Upper Austria is in second place – on a par with Tyrol. Only in Salzburg was the rate even lower at 3.7 percent. Vienna had the highest proportion of job seekers at 10.5 percent, ahead of Carinthia at 7.1 percent. The fall in the unemployment rate in Upper Austria, at minus one percentage point, was not as strong as the national average (minus 1.7 percentage points to 6.3 percent).
The labor market was characterized by an enormous catching-up process after the corona pandemic, combined with record employment and the lowest unemployment since 2011 (in absolute figures, note), the AMS Upper Austria announced. At the same time, the withdrawal of the baby boomer generation from the labor market is making itself felt in the form of a labor shortage in companies. The effects of the global situation had not yet been felt, at least in the past year.
Unemployment fell in all sectors in 2022, but especially in manufacturing and the service sector. On average over the year, 28,740 people were registered as unemployed in Upper Austria (minus 20.1 percent compared to 2021).
“Turbulent Year”
The figures for the month of December are still good. The number of registered unemployed fell by 5.2 percent year-on-year to 37,044. Including training participants, 45,995 were without a job (minus 4.3 percent). The number of reported vacancies rose by 8.4 percent to 29,790.
“The turbulent year 2022 ends with a very satisfactory situation on the Upper Austrian labor market,” says Iris Schmidt, Deputy State manager of the AMS. The strong decline in long-term unemployment is particularly pleasing. According to initial analyses, the increase in construction unemployment is likely to be due to the weather conditions in December. “Despite all the uncertainties, we are optimistic about the new year,” says Schmidt.
