The sentiment indicator had already recovered somewhat in November after falling for six straight months and hitting its lowest level in almost two years in October. A first survey for December was revised upwards with the second estimate. An index value of 48.8 points was initially reported. On average, analysts had expected a confirmation of the first survey.
Despite the increase, the sentiment indicator remains below the expansion threshold of 50 points. The economic indicator, which is closely watched on the financial markets, is signaling a contraction in economic activity for the sixth month in a row.
