Transport: Rail: Customers should get more Sprinter trains out of airplanes

An ICE with 13 cars can carry five times as many people as a medium-haul aircraft, says the railway and wants to attract new customers with an expanded range.

With additional Sprinter connections, Deutsche Bahn intends to compete with domestic German flight offers from mid-December.

Between Berlin and Cologne, for example, sprinters will drive three times a day in under four hours and thus up to half an hour faster than before, as the company announced on Thursday. It is also faster on the Düsseldorf-Cologne-Munich route and in the morning from Hamburg to Frankfurt Airport. Between Berlin and Munich there should be new sprinters in the evening.

On eight of the ten strongest domestic German flight routes, there is a fast and environmentally friendly alternative in the form of sprinter trains, the Deutsche Bahn advertised. An ICE with 13 cars can carry five times as many people as a medium-haul aircraft. On the line Munich-Stuttgart-Frankfurt Airport-Cologne-Dortmund-Hamburg only these extra-long trains should run; Deutsche Bahn is currently receiving a new one every three weeks.

The long-distance route Dortmund / Münster-Siegen-Frankfurt / Main is new to the 2022 timetable, which will apply from December 12 this year. Double-decker intercity trains are to run there. ICE trains replace Intercitys on other connections, for example on the Frankfurt / Karlsruhe-Stuttgart-Ulm-Munich route.
