According to specialists in the sector, some of the reasons that may explain the growth in activity in Vaca Muerta was the new edition of the Gas Plan, added to an increase in both oil and gas exports.
Looking to the future, they emphasize, the ceiling for training “is set by demand”. In this sense, transportation capacity is key and the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline is of vital importance, the first stretch of which is estimated to be operational by the middle of this year.
Regarding the fracture stages, during December YPF was once again the company with the greatest activity, with a total of 307 punctures. They were followed by Vista, with 168; Tecpetrol, with 165; Shell with 136; Pan American Energy (PAE), with 97 stages; Pampa Energía, with 57; Pluspetrol with 52 and Total Austral with 44.
As for the accumulated figure for 2022, YPF also led the list of companies with the greatest activity in this regard: according to the newspaper Río Negro, the state-owned majority oil company reached its own record, with 5,566 fracture stages carried out, 10% more than the ones he had done the previous year.
It was followed by Tecpetrol (with 1,524 stages) and Vista (with 1,410 punctures). Then they appear on the Shell list, with 1,119 stages; PAE, with 1,102; Pluspetrol, with 603; and Total Austral, with 440.
Shale growth
With the growth of Vaca Muerta, logically, the production of shale oil and gas in the country increased sharply. In fact, according to a report from the Center for Production Studies (CEP-XXI) of the Ministry of Productive Development, based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Bloomberg, up to October there had been a 43% growth in oil and 8.4% of gas compared to the same period of 2021.
The CEP report also noted that overall oil production posted the highest level since June 2009 on the seasonally adjusted measure, while gas output posted the second-best October since 2010.
