Croatia’s tourism nears record

After two difficult Corona years, Croatia’s tourism almost reached the numbers from before the pandemic last year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 18.9 million tourist arrivals and 104.8 million overnight stays were counted in the Adriatic country in 2022.

Compared to the record year 2019, arrivals reached 91 percent of the level at the time, and overnight stays 96 percent. Compared to 2021, arrivals increased by 37 percent and overnight stays by 25 percent.

Foreign guests were responsible for 88 percent of overnight stays (92.3 million). Most overnight stays were made by guests from Germany (24.9 million), followed by Slovenia (10.1 million). Austrian holidaymakers took third place among foreign guests with 8.2 million overnight stays.

The expectations for the tourism year 2023 are optimistic, said the head of the Croatian Tourist Association (HTZ), Kristjan Stanicic, with a view to Schengen accession and the introduction of the euro, which will make Croatian tourism even more competitive. The goal for this year is a full recovery of the tourism industry, achieving pre-pandemic results and boosting tourism traffic in the off-season, it said.

The tourism industry accounts for almost a fifth of Croatia’s gross domestic product (GDP).
