Travel will be eight percent more expensive

Travel will be eight percent more expensive

According to an online survey of 1,500 respondents, the holiday budget of Austrians is just under EUR 1,700 (EUR 1,697) and is around EUR 150 more than in the previous year. In Upper Austria, this value is 1585 euros. Because the segment of expensive special trips is increasing rapidly, this value is only of limited significance. More than half (52 percent) plan to spend up to 1,000 euros on their vacation, according to the data from the travel compass, which the Ruefa subsidiary of the Tourist Office collects once a year.

For the first time, not only the plans were queried, but also the trips actually made. Accordingly, the long-distance trips were still well below the plans. In 2023, these are unlikely to reach the level before Corona. On the other hand, there is the basic desire to travel, which, according to Michele Fanton, Managing Director of Ruefa, is “just like before the pandemic”. Nine out of ten Austrians plan to travel, but significantly less in winter than in the past. There is either a lack of desire or a budget for this, or it is not being considered due to the energy crisis. But that shouldn’t hide the fact that winter sports remain important in Austria, says Managing Director Helga Freund. In particular, holidaymakers from the Netherlands or Great Britain would fill the beds – even more than in 2019.

What will be different in 2023 was asked. 61 percent say that inflation is having an impact on holiday planning. The Ruefa bosses recommend taking advantage of early booking offers. This can save up to 40 percent of travel costs – especially when it comes to hotels. 16 percent of those surveyed also plan accordingly. Others want to switch to cheaper destinations or off-season. It is striking that only a third of the vacation dates of Austrians depend directly on school holidays, but 46 percent still want to spend their main vacation in July or August. Fanton also sees a task here for the travel agency industry to upgrade the off-seasons with alternative offers.
