The state administration has written the “Upper Austrian climate and energy strategy” on 160 pages. Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP) presented them on Wednesday together with the head of the environmental protection department, Ulrike Jäger-Urban, and the state climate protection officer Andreas Drack.
“The strategy is comprehensive and realistic, not small-small or dreamy and without ideological slogans,” said Stelzer. Above all, it is a matter of joining forces in the country. So far, the climate protection-relevant objectives were anchored in the various subject-related state concepts. In the future, all responsible departments and departments are to be networked with one another in order to improve overall control of the climate targets.
Climate neutrality by 2040: “Progress is far too slow”
The strategy builds on the government program of the black-blue state coalition and existing state and federal strategies. From Stelzer’s point of view, the new way of working is essential: there will be regular reports to the climate council and a permanent state working group. Every year it should be checked how far you are on the way towards climate neutrality.
Little ambition for wind power
There was immediate criticism from the Environment Councilor Stefan Kaineder (Greens): The strategy was unambitious. Contrary to what was announced in the fall, the strategy does not state, for example, that there will be simplifications in procedures for wind turbines or that new wind farms will be built. This means that it is not possible to build the new wind farm on the Saurüssel that many mayors have been calling for. When it comes to wind power, the strategy talks about repowering and expanding existing systems.
The strategy is to be decided by the state government on Monday.
