Telecommunications: Data traffic at DE-CIX internet nodes increases by a quarter

Whether professional or private: During the pandemic, many activities shifted to the Internet. However, it was not the home office or Netflix that caused the data record last year – but king football.

International Internet traffic continued to increase significantly in the past year. The internet exchange operator DE-CIX, which is one of the world leaders, saw its data traffic increase by a quarter at its international locations in 2022. The statistics included not only the data from the network node in Frankfurt/Main, but also from the distribution points in Mubai, New York and Madrid and other DE-CIX locations.

A total of more than 48 exabytes of data were exchanged at the DE-CIX internet nodes in 2022. This corresponds to the storage capacity of more than 370 million smartphones, each with 128 GB of storage space. In 2021, the total data throughput was still 38 exabytes.

“More and more data is being transmitted throughout the Internet because modern, digital applications and services require more and more data from different sources,” explained Christoph Dietzel, Head of Production and Research at DE-CIX. This trend will continue as consumer demands for digital applications continue to grow.

132 terabytes in one minute

DE-CIX recorded the highest data throughput of 2022 worldwide on December 14: On the evening of the second semi-final at the soccer World Cup in Qatar between France and Morocco at around 8:28 p.m. in one minute, 132 terabytes flowed via the Internet nodes and gave the stations in New York and Frankfurt set new records.

According to DE-CIX, there were clear differences over the course of the year as to when which services were used. In the summer months, for example, there was a significant slump in data traffic from video conferences at the major internet nodes in Frankfurt, New York and Madrid.

DE-CIX operates one of the world’s largest internet nodes in Frankfurt am Main. The company offers its services in more than 40 metropolitan areas in Europe, Africa, North America, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.
