Aldi Süd introduces new checkout concept to shorten queues

Discounter Aldi Süd wants to make the checkout process even faster and reduce queues. The new checkout concept includes double checkouts and self-checkout terminals.

It’s not exactly leisurely at an Aldi checkout. But now the discounter has apparently found ways to speed up the checkout process even further. With new checkout concepts, Aldi Süd wants to pay its customers even more efficiently and at the same time improve the service, like the discounter.

The new features include expanded double checkouts and self-service terminals where you can scan and pay for your purchases yourself. For example, “selected branches in urban areas” are to be equipped with self-checkout registers, where customers can collect their own cash. The focus here is primarily on shops in the vicinity of schools and offices, where many smaller purchases are made, explains André Giesen, Director National Store Operations at Aldi Süd. “Here, self-checkout registers are ideal for straightening out possible queues in the checkout area,” says Giesen.

New Aldi checkouts in the first quarter

In addition, all Aldi Süd branches are to be upgraded with at least one double checkout, where two customers can be served at the same time. These registers are longer and have a double aisle with two displays. They also have two separate EC terminals and receipt printers. Aldi Süd explains that the next purchase can be recorded while the previous customer is still paying with the card. In addition, customers have more time to pack the goods.

The new checkout concepts have been extensively tested in 30 pilot branches. The double tills would now be “gradually” upgraded. The rollout of the self-checkout lanes is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2023. There are already self-service checkouts at numerous other supermarkets, discounters and drugstores. Aldi Süd has been using them in Great Britain since 2019.
