Labor market stable: 22,852 fewer people looking for a job

317,114 of them are looking for a job, 70,175 are in AMS training courses. Compared to the previous year, this is a total of 22,852 fewer people. “This development is evidence of the current crisis resilience of the labor market,” said Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP).

A comparison with the years 2020 and 2021 also continues to paint a positive picture. At the beginning of January 2021, unemployment including training participants was 148,128 people above the current level. In the comparative period of 2020, when there were no corona-related restrictions in Austria, the number of job seekers was 31,453 higher than at present.

Pre-registrations for short-time work amount to 492 people this week. “This means that the number of pre-registrations is currently at a low level,” said Kocher in a broadcast on Tuesday.

Regarding the general economic development, he stated: “According to the OECD, the GDP in the penultimate week from January 1 to 7, 2023 was 5.1 percent higher than in the corresponding week of the previous year 2022. The strong economic growth is primarily due to the low reference value in the previous year, which was characterized by corona-related restrictions on the economy.”
