Services: Post-tariff talks: Verdi insists on plus 15 percent

In view of the high inflation, the union wants to bring out strong wage increases for the employees. The Post board sees it differently.

To continue the post-collective bargaining, the Verdi union has reiterated its demand for a 15 percent wage increase. In view of the high inflation, this is “not unrealistic, but necessary, fair and feasible,” said the negotiator Andrea Kocsis.

The negotiations for the approximately 160,000 employees of Deutsche Post in Germany continued on Wednesday in Cologne, as a company spokesman said. The meeting is scheduled for two days.

At the first round of negotiations on January 6, the positions were still far apart. The Post board of directors considers the union’s demand unrealistic.

Verdi representative Kocsis said before the second round that the negotiations would go “in depth”. The Post has made it clear that it is interested in a very long contract period – until mid-2025. Verdi wants a one-year collective agreement.

A big step forward is expected, said Kocsis. If this does not happen, a decision will be made as to “whether we need to emphasize our demands in the companies”. This means warning strikes. The smaller trade union DPVKOM is already using this tool on a small scale: on Tuesday there was a warning strike in Karlsruhe.

Deutsche Post DHL is highly profitable. However, the focus of the business activity is abroad.
