Why fewer ships were unloaded in Ennshafen in 2021

Several factors were responsible for the fact that significantly fewer ships were loaded ashore in Ennshafen than in previous years. Because at 560,000 tons, handling in 2022 has practically halved compared to 2021. The logistics business in the container terminal has almost reached the level of 2021 with 457,000 tons.

The peak value in water handling of almost 1.2 million tons in 2021 was due to the exceptional business of transporting gravel due to the excavation work on the Linz Westring. That’s why 2020 and 2021 were particularly good, according to Werner Auer, Managing Director of Ennshafen Oberösterreich.

The omission alone would have meant a relapse to around 600,000 to 700,000 tons. This had existed in previous years. But then came the Ukraine war, which brought about a collapse in grain transport on the Danube. Last but not least, low water dried up development for a few weeks in the summer.

Auer is satisfied with the development of handling figures in the container terminal. “Here, growth was only possible with the lease to Kaindl, because this was a question of tracks and space,” explains Auer. The Salzburg Kaindl Group took over the majority, Deutsche Bahn is a 49 percent partner.

The long-term development over ten years also shows that the almost doubling of tonnages achieved in 2015 gained momentum when the container terminal was leased. The state of Upper Austria had previously complained about high departures. In 2020 and 2021, the 400,000 tons announced in 2015 were significantly exceeded – with an available capacity of 500,000 tons. The large areas would be used by companies and shipping companies for interim storage, and the train connections for freight trains would be expanded to Rijeka, for example.

The states of Upper Austria and Lower Austria once invested in the infrastructure, and business around the port is handled by the companies located there. In total there are 61 companies with 2700 employees. How will 2023 go? “It’s much too early for that,” says Auer.
