That would be an increase of 30 percent compared to the 115 million euros that the board last expected for 2022. The airport spoke on Thursday of a “successful comeback in aviation”. 23.7 million passengers were counted in Vienna last year, an increase of 127 percent compared to 2021, but 25 percent fewer than in the record year 2019.
“Aviation returned in 2022: the number of passengers at Vienna Airport has more than doubled and is now around 75 percent of the pre-crisis level,” said Board Member Julian Jäger. “For 2023 we therefore expect further growth to 26 to 27 million passengers at the Vienna location.”
“For the first time in decades, Flughafen Wien AG is debt-free and can finance the planned investments from its own cash flow,” emphasized CEO Günther Ofner. In 2023, sales are expected to increase to EUR 830 million and the operating result EBITDA to over EUR 325 million. The investments are almost doubled to 135 million euros.
Planned extensions
Investment projects include the southern extension of Terminal 3 (formerly Skylink). The start of construction is planned for mid-2023, and the building is scheduled to go into operation in 2027. The photovoltaic system will also be expanded this year, from 26 to 45 hectares. In total, the system will then comprise around 100,000 panels. With around 55,000 panels, it is already one of the largest PV systems in Austria. The ground-mounted PV system is located south of runway 11L/29R and, if the third runway is built, would be between these two runways.
After the massive drop in passengers during the corona pandemic, Vienna Airport had put plans for the third runway on hold for the time being. No measures for the realization would be taken, it said. Before the corona crisis, the plan was to start work in 2024 or 2025. “The project has not been cancelled,” but it could be that “it will be pushed back a few years,” said Ofner in 2021.
