26 tips for more sustainable living in 2023

26 tips for more sustainable living in 2023

1. Rethink meat consumption: Less meat consumption means more environmental quality. A kilo of beef releases a good 12 kilos of CO2, a kilo of bread just under 600 grams.

2. Water is for drinking: What speaks against tap water instead of soft drinks? Water is mostly of the highest quality. Herbs (balm, mint) refine it.

3. Simply cook yourself: Cooking for yourself not only helps to save, but also raises awareness of additives used in industrial foods.

4. Rethink packaging: Reusable instead of disposable, glass instead of plastic or cans. If you take suitable containers (Tupperware) to the supermarket, you save.

reusable

In cooperation with the environmental organization Greenpeace, the Berglandmilch dairy is converting its milk in glass bottles to a reusable system. For the environmental organization, reusable packaging is the only solution to reducing packaging waste for drinks and fighting the plastic crisis.

5. Slow down fast fashion: Clothing has almost become a disposable product. Better to pay more for organic and fair and get by with fewer pieces.

6. Optimize living: Does it really need 23 degrees in the living room? Isn’t my money better invested in photovoltaics than in the savings account?

7. Environmentally friendly mobility: Your feet are there for walking, at least for short distances. In the city, the bicycle trumps all other forms of mobility.

8. Avoid littering early: You can carry a coffee to go in disposable paper and plastic cups or in a smart reusable container.

9. Share tool: Buy a hammer drill just because a screw is loose? Why not share tools with the neighbors?

10. Less Smoking: Bulrush, but: those who smoke less improve their health. Tchick filters pollute the environment, as do single-use e-vapors.

11. Sustainable finances: There are now forms of investment (funds) that promote sustainable management. Here, as in general, the following applies: Inform yourself exactly!

12. Fish is not just fish: Fish is healthy, but not always sustainable. Quality seals help with orientation. The most sustainable fish is the organic carp.

13. Cheese is not without CO2: Cheese has twice the CO2 value as sausage. Give vegetable fats (e.g. margarine, spreads) a chance!

14. Just think: Do I really need this or that purchase? The personal footprint check is also illuminating: mein-fussabdruck.at

15. Doesn’t get on my skin: Have you ever looked at the ingredients list of the skin cream? Better: make it yourself and avoid ingredients like palm oil.

16. Shop offline: Online shopping may be convenient, but it has negative consequences: massive packaging, lots of traffic, inner-city impoverishment.

17. On vacation by train: The train is an alternative to holiday flights, especially up to 1000 km. Anyone who flies should compensate for CO2, but right!

18. Gardening big and small: Having your own garden avoids shopping trips and enriches the menu. A lot can also be grown on balconies.

19. Drink old-style: Drinking straws can be easily removed from the plastic waste. You can easily drink from a glass or mug without it.

20. Upcycling and Fixing: Upcycling means making something new out of old stuff. The first step would be to fix things instead of throwing them away.

Upcycling is closely linked to the sustainability trend.

21. Celebrate sustainably: Man does not live by work alone, he must also celebrate. Abandoning cans and tetra packs would be an important step.

22. Become more social: Sustainable also means strengthening one’s social relationships. Man is just a pack animal, despite the terror of individualism.

23. Reduce streaming: While streaming movies and series may be convenient, it is very harmful to the environment. Half an hour of video consumption causes the equivalent of 1.6 kilograms of CO2 emissions. This corresponds to a car journey of 6.3 kilometers. In between, just turn up the normal TV channels again.

Streaming on a laptop, mobile phone or television is becoming increasingly popular. Unfortunately, this is bad for the environment.

24. Choose a lower resolution when streaming: Even choosing a lower video resolution significantly reduces the amount of power required for streaming.

25. Skip 4k/UHD: Think twice before buying a 4k/UHD device. Because the human eye does not perceive the difference in image resolution between Ultra HD and Full HD.

26. Why not just start? It is a small step for a person to act more sustainably, but a big step for the earth. Just do one or the other now and be a role model!
